AZ County Fails to Certify Election, Risks GOP Victories
The Arizona election laws require each county in the state to certify the results of the elections held in their jurisdictions. As of today, Cochise County has failed to certify the election results from its voters, and a preliminary deadline has passed to get the paperwork done. The drop-dead date is December 8, and if certification is not done then, the votes in Cochise County will not count. This will cost the Republican Party the House seat for the Sixth Congressional District of Arizona. It will also cost them a state-government education post. Election denial has consequences.
The three members of the county board who do the certification are divided two Republicans to 1 Democrat. Tom Crosby and Peggy Judd are high-church MAGA Trumpists, and Ms. Judd was in attendance at the insurrection in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021. Like all of their ilk, they call into question the legitimacy of the election process and execution saying they do not trust computers, that there was fraud/ The odd thing is that they are withholding certification not because of what happened in their county but rather because of what they claim happened in Maricopa County. Nothiing out of the ordinary happened there, and there is absolutely no proof that something was amiss there. Facts have never stopped the MAGAts.
The Arizona Republic states, "In a twist, if Cochise doesn\'t certify in time, [Juan] Ciscomani -- the GOP congressman who won the race for AZ-06 -- will lose the county\'s critical votes and the seat could flip blue. Much of Ciscomani\'s 5,232-vote margin of victory came from Cochise, where he led his Democratic opponent Kirsten Engel by 13,775 votes."
That paper also said, “A close race for superintendent of Arizona schools saw Republican Tom Horne defeat Democrat Kathy Hoffman by just 8,968 votes. In Cochise County, Horne led Hoffman by 9,310 votes -- enough to cancel his victory in the unlikely event that the county\'s results are discarded."
Now, the odds are the board in Cochise County will certify the election at the last moment. The threats of jail-time for failing to do their jobs (a felony of the lowest order under state law) have helped focus Ms. Judd and Mr. Crosby on the immediate issue.
"There\'s more time," Ms. Judd told The Daily Beast. "It\'s extended till the 8th for the Secretary of State and she will get her certification. She just needs to wait. And hopefully something happens between now and then with these other players. But if it doesn\'t, it doesn\'t, I\'m not gonna let my county\'s voters not get counted. It wouldn\'t be beneficial to anyone."
Now if the Democratic Secretary of State (Governor-Elect Hobbs) wanted to be difficult, she would announce that the drop dead day of December 8 is actually irrelevant. The county missed the preliminary deadline, and that is that. She could refuse to accept the votes. She will not do this, but the GOP needs to realize that they do not hold all the cards, nor even the best hand here.
The Republican Big Lie, that the 2020 election was stolen, has always had a problem with simple electoral mechanics. If the vote count was altered for the presidency, why not the votes for Senator, Governor, Congressman, dog-catcher? The same ballot covered those races as well. It makes no sense for someone to alter the outcome of one election and not others if they have access to the process.
This case shows that the Republicans in some places are so dedicated to protecting the Big Lie that they want future elections to be questioned as well. Cochise County shows the lengths they are will to go to, willing to risk losing elections in order to avoid admitting the truth.
