Truck Attack Kills 15 in New Orleans

The hope for the New Year lasted about 3 hours and 15 minutes in New Orleans. At about 3:15 am January 1, a US army veteran, born and raised in Texas, drove a pickup truck down Bourbon Street in New Orleans. He murdered 15 people (with more hospitalized) before dying in a police shootout. The details are still coming out, but the political importance of this cannot be understated. This will serve at the MAGA Reichstag Fire. It will be invoked constantly for the next for years (along with other attacks) to justify the immigration and security policies of the incoming administration.

CBS News stated, "The man responsible for a deadly truck attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S.-born citizen from Texas, the FBI said. He was a U.S. Army veteran who lived in Houston. The FBI said he posted several videos before the attack proclaiming his support for ISIS."

NBC gave Mr. Trump's reaction as this, "'When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,' Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social as information was still trickling out about the ramming attack on Wednesday morning."

The same NBC report noted that Fox News had stated Mr. Jabbar had crossed into the US from Mexico 2 days before the attack. The network then walked back its reporting on this point but not before the damage had been done. NBC explained,

Donald Trump Jr., the president-elect's eldest son, posted a news article about the erroneous report, saying, "Biden's parting gift to America -- migrant terrorists."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., posted shortly after the initial segment: "New Orleans terrorist attacker is said to have come across the border in Eagle Pass TWO DAYS AGO!!! Shut the border down!!!"

Once these ideas are in the public realm, a great many people, who want to believe it is true, will refuse any data or explanation that suggests otherwise. The country has seen this before. The argument will be that the initial report was correct but THEY (whoever they are) forced Fox to change it reporting, and it is all part of a giant cover-up by the deep state.

This is harmful to the country in two related ways. First, it creates a divide over what the facts are, which makes debate impossible. That is beneficial to authoritarians because they cannot be proved to be liars despite the fact that they are. The people who need convincing will refused to be convinced.

Second, it prevents addressing the real problem because the real problem is being denied. The real problem is domestic terrorists. Since at least Timothy McVeigh murdered those kids in Oklahoma City a generation ago, America has had a problem with domestic terrorism. No one dares call it that because it is useful for many to make terrorist and Muslim mean the same thing. As the IRA and UVF in Northern Ireland proved, terrorists can claim to be Christian, too. Many of the American terrorists claim to be doing what Jesus would want.

Here is how this probably plays out. Mr. Jabbar will be used as an excuse to round up people for deportation based more on appearance than on violent actions or lack of documentation. The Arab-Americans who withheld their votes for Joe Biden will soon discover they were turkeys voting for Thanksgiving. The same is probably true of the Hispanic population in the southwest and big cities.

Meanwhile, the IEDs and shootings and so on will continue from America's domestic terrorists. Law enforcement will get a few of the bad guys before they commit their crimes, but getting rid of the poison in the body politic will not happen.
