Cogito Ergo Non Serviam The new Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has been in office ten days. He has already called an election because he has the old-fashioned idea that a democratic leader must have a mandate from the electorate. Polling day will be April 28, proving once again that the Westminster model is superior to the Madison model in America. The latter replaced its leader and voted in a new one without the 2-year-plus campaign. One does not expect Mr. Carney to win outright, but he does have a fighting change to lead the Liberals into a coalition. His training is just about ideal for the current situation. First off, he is not an elected official with a long list of offices as he climbs the greasy pole. Instead, he has not been elected to much of anything other than the leadership of the Liberals. He is an economist and financier by training. When people say they want a businessman like Mr. Trump, what they are really saying is they want someone who knows finance, trade, business and labor. Mr. Carney was Governor of the Bank of Canada, then the same job with the Bank of England. Earlier in life, he worked for Goldman Sachs. He has degrees from Harvard and Oxford. Wikipedia notes
As PM if he wins in April, Canada will have a man who not only knows the global trading system but has the metaphoric dirt under his nails from working on it for years. He already knows most of the important finance ministers and other leaders. He is the sort of technocrat that this journal prefers during a crisis. Canada is in crisis, not of its own making but of Mr. Trump and his hallucinations (vision is not a word that fits). Canada will never be a US state, and it will never toe the line Washington wants unless it is also in Canadian interests to do so. He is the safe pair of hands. He has also caught up in the polls, much to the surprise of the Kensington Review as anyone else. Newsweek reported,
That is a huge change from the Tories leading by double-digits as they were when Mr. Trudeau resigned as PM and Liberal leader. The election is five weeks away, and much can happen in that time. Who knows what events will crop up to alter the polls? What is certain is that the Conservative takeover of Canada under pro-MAGA Pierre Poilievre is not yet a done deal. © Copyright 2025 by The Kensington Review, Jeff Myhre, PhD, Editor.
