Cogito Ergo Non Serviam

Canada Votes, Carney for PM

The people of Canada wills select a new Prime Minister and Parliament today. While some elections hinge on housing shortages or wages falling behind, this one is about something much more fundamental. Canada is being asked today how it wants to preserve its independence in the face of an American administration with its eyes on annexation. This journal believes that there is little difference among the top three parties in their commitment to Canada. The big difference is personal; who the PM is will matter a great deal more so than the party. For that reason, this journal urges its Canadian readers to back Mark Carney and the Liberals.

Canada is not perfect to be sure. There is a problem with housing. Substance abuse is an issue that needs addressing. A high cost of living and a high-ish unemployment rate have made many Canadian angry.

The three big parties (Liberal, Conservative and New Democratic) all agree that these are the matters of the day -- after addressing the threat Donald Trump poses to the very existence of Canada. Moreover, each of them agrees that Mr. Trump is a threat. Where divisions arise is in how each would respond.

The Tories are led by Pierre Poilievre. The New York Times reports "Mr. Poilievre, 45, a career politician, supports many staple conservative policies, such as cutting back the role of the state, limiting taxes, supporting Canada's oil-and-gas industries and being tough on crime.

"But he also promotes ideas aligned with Mr. Trump's brand of conservatism: denouncing 'radical woke ideology,' promoting steep cuts to Canada's foreign aid and defunding the national broadcaster."

One does not see the benefits to Canada by reducing aid and quieting the CBC in a fight with the US over economics. Indeed, one could argue these are the very things that will keep Canadians united and allies content.

This journal supports the Canadian New Democrats almost by default in most elections. Their values are the same as the values here. Their website reads in part, "don't confuse our Canadian kindness with weakness. We won't sit by while Donald Trump threatens good Canadian jobs, and threatens to drive high prices even higher.

"There's someone threatening our way of life here in Canada, too: Pierre Poilievre. Trump's billionaire lackey, Elon Musk, has threatened Canadian sovereignty calling for our annexation. He has also endorsed Poilievre. Why? Because billionaires know that they'll get even richer on the backs of working-class Canadians with Poilievre's Conservatives.

"It's time to fight for our country. All of us. Together."

Indeed, it is, and that is why this journal is backing the Liberals and Mark Carney. Jagmeet Singh of the NDP is a credible candidate for Sussex Gardens, and he is an able leader. Mark Carney is just a better fit for the times. He is a former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. The man has forgotten more about global finance and trade than most of the world leaders know. It was he who coordinated the selling off of US Treasuries to raise US interest rates when the tariffs were announced. That hurt quickly and quietly. Mr. Trump blinked several times.

Canada will be fine no matter how the election turns out because each of the potential PMs are more than competent and will address Mr. Trump as appropriate. One prefers the re-election of Prime Minister. Carney because he is uniquely positioned to fight an economic war.
