Cogito Ergo Non Serviam

UK Stops Caribbean Intel Sharing with US

The US and the UK have been joined at the hip in matters of intelligence since at least the 1940s and perhaps back farther than that. Sharing of intel is part of the Western defense system. Not only do the UK and US share intelligence, but they had added Canada, Australia and New Zealand to the mix to create the "Five Eyes" group. By helping one another, resources go a lot farther than if there were no cooperation. Today, CNN is reporting that the UK has stopped giving the US intel on Caribbean drug boats because the America policy of blowing them out of the water without even a warrant violates international law. When the UK ceases to trust the US on intelligence matters, No Eyes seems to be the future.

CNN noted:

the Trump administration has argued that the US military can legally kill suspected traffickers because they pose an imminent threat to Americans and are “enemy combatants” who are in an "armed conflict" with the US, according to a memo sent by the administration to Congress. The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel issued an opinion, which is still classified, reinforcing that argument, CNN has reported, and Trump has designated a number of drug cartels as "foreign terrorist groups." The White House has said repeatedly that the administration’s actions "comply fully with the Law of Armed Conflict," the area of international law that is designed to prevent attacks on civilians.

This is utter nonsense. If the US has the capacity to sink these vessels with ordnance dropped from planes or drones, it has the capacity to detain the boat and arrest the crew for trial. That is not what the Trump administration is doing. They are deliberately killing people without any proof to the public in whose name those killings occur.

The most telling information comes from a submarine that the US sank, capturing two crewmembers. The BBC explained:

US military forces captured the Ecuadorean national along with a Colombian citizen after they attacked the submarine the two were on. US President Donald Trump said they would be returned to their countries of origin "for detention and prosecution".

But the Ecuadorean Attorney General's office has said in a statement that the Ecuadorean survivor "could not be detained" because there was "no report of a crime that has been brought to the attention of this institution".

That is, at best, incredibly sloppy. Either the US should have put them on trial or passed on the evidence so that the home country could prosecute the suspects. Could it be that there was no evidence and that having a trial would have proved lethal the the Trump administration's policy? As it is, the administration has let an alleged drug smuggler go free, if he was indeed a drug smuggler.

The policy needs to go anyway. The video is there to keep the MAGA base happy because US bombs are killing bad guys. Unless the bombs do not kill, in which case, the bad guys get a trip home to live as free men. Stopping the flow of drugs would be a nice by-product of the policy, but its purpose is to create a video stream of explosions that make it look like something is being done. Since most of the drugs flowing into the US are not smuggled in using small boats, even it if works flawlessly, the amount of drugs halted would be a rounding error in the overall count. It is all theatre for the mob.

The decline under the Tump administration continues to accelerate.
