Cogito Ergo Non Serviam
Epstein Files Vote in House Next Week
The sad case of Jeffrey Epstein and his trafficking of children for sexual purposes is the neverending scandal of the Trump years. As the government shutdown came to an end, Adelita Grajalva finally got sworn in as a Democratic representative from Arizona. Hers was the last signature needed on the discharge petition to force a vote on releasing the entirety of the Epstein Files, the vast amount of evidence held by the Justice Department. In addition, the Epstein estate handed to Congress more evidence that it had, and much of that has made it into the media. It does not look good for President Trump.
The Democrats in the House released some of the new information, and the Republicans immediately accused them of cherry-picking information. So, they released all the new information, and researchers are still going through it all. The most devastating email read:
"I want you to realize that that dog that hasnt barked is trump [sic]. [Victim redacted in Democrats' release, Virginia Giuffre in the GOP version] spent hours at my house with him" Mr. Epstein to Ghislaine Maxwell, currently serving time in federal prison for her role in the scandal, sent in 2011.
Also two others bode ill for the president:
"Trump said he asked me to resign, never a member ever. Of course he knew about the girls as he asked ghislaine [sic] to stop." Mr. Epstein to Michael Wolff, who has written four books about the president, sent January 31, 2019.
In another exchange dated Dec. 15, 2015, Wolff allegedly emailed Epstein that he1d heard CNN planned to ask Trump about their relationship. CNN hosted the 5th Republican primary debate of the 2016 election cycle on December 15, 2015. Epstein asked: "If we were able to craft an answer for him, what do you think it should be?" Wolff offered, in part, that "If he says he hasn't been on the plane or to the house, then that gives you a valuable PR and political currency. You can hang him in a way that potentially generates a positive benefit for you, or, if it really looks like he could win, you could save him, generating a debt."
There is much more to come, and it will be a long and painful process for MAGA and the president. The vote in the House is likely to pass, and in the Senate, there is no filibuster rule involved. A simple majority is all that is needed. There are 13 GOP Senators up from re-election, and it is reasonable to assume a few will vote for transparency. If four or more join the Democrats, the bill passes. Of course, Mr. Trump will veto the bill, and it is unlikely that 2/3 of both houses of Congress will vote to override.
But that is going to look bad going into an election year. The Party of No Healthcare and Child Sex Trafficking is how the Democrats will paint the Republicans, and it will be accurate enough to cost the GOP the House and possibly the Senate. When that happens, the worst of the second Trump term could be over. Lame duck presidents, and Mr. Trump will be one in 2027, never get much done. That might be the best possible thing for the nation.
Whether that happens or not, the decline under the Trump administration continues to accelerate.
