Board of Peace is Nonsense
Having caved in on his demand for sovereingty over Greenland, Donald Trump spent part of today launching a completely useless entity called the "Board of Peace." It is an ephermeral body that exists allegedly to rebuild Gaza, but the fact is that the area is not even mentioned in the charter that Mr. Trump and his minions signed today shows what nonsense it is. He is even charging a billion dollar price for a permanent seat. It seems that Mr. Trump wants a rival body to the UN that he can control. One can call into question whether the world needs the UN, but what is certain is that the world does not need a second one.
CNN reported,
The board, indefinitely chaired by Trump, was originally conceived as a limited body tasked to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, which was decimated by Israel's two-year war. But its purpose has since expanded to tackle conflicts the world over, and the charter draft, which was sent along with the invitations to join, does not even reference Gaza.
US adversaries Russia and China, as well as longtime repressive state Belarus, are among those invited to join the board, offering permanent seats for a $1 billion price tag. European allies, oil-rich gulf states, former Soviet republics and even the Pope have also received offers to join.
Among the members are Aleksandr Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, a nation so wedded to its Soviet past that the security services still go by the acronym KGB. There is Viktor Orban, the undemocratic leader of Hungary, who has been a Trump fan from the beginning. And there is Javier Milei, the faux libertarian president of Argentina, who turned up because Mr. Trump handed him $40 billion to balance Argentine finances. Absent are every other nation in the western Hemisphere and all of the EU save Hungary. To say it lacks democratic legitimacy is an understatement.
Indeed, the US administration has lied about Belgium joining (this journal refuses to call it a mistake because it is too big to excuse). The Hill noted:
The White House initially included a list on Thursday that included Belgium as a member, however the country's Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot said otherwise.
"Belgium has NOT signed the Charter of the Board of Peace. This announcement is incorrect," Prevot wrote in a post on X. "We wish for a common and coordinated European response. As many European countries, we have reservations to the proposal."
Mired as it is in deceit and wishful thinking, the BoP is going nowhere. The idea of rebuilding Gaza and investing massives sums to achieve that is noble. Yet without security, no one is going to invest, As the chairman of Exxon said of Venezuela (another blunder by the American president), it is "uninvestible." Israel killed more Palestinians yesterday in Gaza (there is only a ceasefire on paper), claiming them to be Hamas terrorists. That is probably not true, but stipulating that it is so, one proves the point that there is not enough security there to make investment wise. And the board seems unequipped to deal with that.
The real problem, though, is Mr. Trump himself. He will be out of office in 2029 (unless his diet takes him first). The New York Times stated, "The charter would also invest considerable personal power in Mr. Trump. In addition to his veto power, Mr. Trump would be able to name his own successor. He would also be empowered to enact 'resolutions or other directives' to carry out the board's mission."
It is his plan to continue to have some sort of power if he cannot stay in the White House.
The decline under the Trump administration continues to accelerate.
