Cogito Ergo Non Serviam

Trump Fires Bovino for Losing Minneapolis Battle

The Trump administration has bitten off way more than it can chew by invading Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a few thousand ICE and Border Patrol agents. These untrained militiamen have been violating the constitution the way an occupying army might, with about as much respect for the civilians among whom they goosestep. They have murdered two US citizens with point-blank pistol shots to the head. The lying from the DHS does not work because the video clearly shows the lie for what it is. Mr. Trump has started surrendering by firing Greg Bovino as the commander of ICE et al. Bribe-taker Tom Homan takes over. Firing the general will not work, though, because the troops are the problem

Mr. Bovino is the head of the Border Patrol, an organization that does its work mostly in the American desert southwest. Usually, they encounter a few people desperate to get to safety, fleeing Central and South American chaos. Sometimes, they find drug mules or human traffickers, and an aggressive approach serves them well under these circumstances. They are not suited by their training to deal with civilian populations in major cities.

Even if he had troops trained suitably, it is doubtful he is the guy to lead anything, He has militarized the Border Patrol in Minneapolis, deploying them in camoflauge (which stands out a mile in snowy Minnesota), and telling them they can enter homes without warrants. Even when the threw a tear gas cannister in Chicago, much to the alarm of the media, he failed to employ correct technique. And the judge in a recent case called him a "serial fabulist." Not the leader one wants to see.

MS-NOW, formerly MSNBC, reported

Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino will no longer oversee immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, a senior Trump administration official told MS NOW, as the White House scrambles to deal with the outrage over Alex Pretti’s killing in Minneapolis. […]

There will also be a reduction of Department of Homeland Security officers in Minnesota, two officials briefed on the matter told MS NOW on condition of anonymity to discuss law enforcement deployment details.

This is a retreat, a surrender. One expects that Mr. Trump will act against another country or city to distract from the fact that his mission in the snows of Minnesota failed. The president has even managed to lose part of the gun lobby over the killing of Mr. Pretti, who was legally carrying a sidearm with a permit (the gun taken from him before he was shot dead). The president said he should not have had a gun at a protest. The NRA had kittens.

Tom Homan, as the head of ICE, has more experience. In that regard, he is an improvement. But MSNBC (as it then was) reported back in September, "In an undercover operation last year, the FBI recorded Tom Homan, now the White House border czar, accepting $50,000 in cash after indicating he could help the agents -- who were posing as business executives -- win government contracts in a second Trump administration."

The case was dropped by the Trump DoJ. The man has replaced a serial fabulist with a man who will sell his office. Perhaps, Governor Walz should offer him $50,000 to leave Minnesota and take his troops with him.

The decline under the Trump administration continues to decline.
