Cogito Ergo Non Serviam

Epstein Files Roil UK Establishment

While the White House and Justice Department try desperately to prevent the Epstein Files from showing what kind of man Donald Trump really is, the files have threatened both the monarchy and His Majesty's Government in the last week. The man who was once known as Prince Andrew, now Mr. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, fell even farther into disgrace with the release of unpleasant photos of him being unpleasant. It is hard to say what more can be done to him as punishment short of a trial. Meanwhile, Peter Mandelson (the man behind Tony Blair and New Labour) is out as ambassador to the US and as a member of the House of Lords as emails suggest he gave calssified businss informationb to Mr. Epstein. The government is in trouble.

With regard to Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor, he really is proof that being the spare and not the heir is a tough job. With no purpose and lots of money, he found a way to indulge in his urges in ways few can. The New York Times summed up his fall like this"

Mr. Mountbatten Windsor's troubles continued with a disastrous BBC interview in 2019, during which he tried to explain his friendship with Mr. Epstein. After the interview, he announced he would step away from public life.

A legal reckoning came in 2022, when Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor settled a lawsuit brought by Ms. Giuffre against him directly, which accused him of raping her after she was trafficked by Mr. Epstein. In the course of the lawsuit, Buckingham Palace announced that the prince would relinquish his military titles and royal charities and that he would no longer use the title "His Royal Highness."

From here, there can only be civil suit settlements and possibly a criminal trial. It would not be the first time a royal has been tried. Charles I was tried and executed in 1649. One does not expect Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor to lose his head, but he could lose his freedom. Of course, he has no more titles to lose. Not even the king can make him lose "Mister."

Peter Mandelson, the Prince of Darkness according to the Conservatives and many in his own Labour Party, has been the power behind the Labour throne for decades. He engineered the party leadership of Tony Blair over Gordon Brown in the 1990s, and he has never really gone away. His spouse is also male, so his interest in the Epstein Girls is unlikely. Yet, Mr. Epstein had power as a procurer. He had the dirt of a lot of people, and Howard Lutnick the US Commerce Secretary said of Mr Epstein "This guy was the greatest blackmailer ever." It seems the former Lord Mandelson tried to influence the blackmailer.

The U.K. government says newly released Epstein files suggest Mandelson -- a former Cabinet minister, ambassador and elder statesman of the governing Labour Party -- may have shared market-sensitive information with the convicted sex offender a decade and a half ago.

London's Metropolitan Police force said detectives had reviewed reports of misconduct and decided they met the threshold for a full investigation.

Commander Ella Marriott said the force "has now launched an investigation into a 72-year-old man, a former government minister, for misconduct in public office offenses."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has a lot of explaining to do because he appointed Mr. Mandelson to be ambassador to the US, and this was after his relationship with Mr. Epstein was known as well as his human trafficking. Prime Minister's Question Time was difficult today, but when the investigation gets going, PMQs will be even harder.

This is what accountability looks like when it gets started. One wonders if the same will ever happen in America.
