Andrew, Formerly Known as Prince, Arrested

Thames Valley Police [TVP] have arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former prince of the realm and ex-Duke of York, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. As of this writing, he is still in custody. TVP are searching his homes in Berkshire and Norfolk. This occurred after a "thorough assessment," of the evidence and an official investigation is open. It looks bad for Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor, the Royal Family and anyone else in the Epstein Files. The American government has attempted to hush this all up, but they have no influence over TVP, the British media nor the other European nations with nationals in the files.

To appreciate how significant this is, the last time a royal was arrested in Britain, the year was 1647 and Charles I had lost a civil war with Parliament. He was executed in 1649 for treason. No one is suggesting that anyone will lose a head, but it is damned serious.

The law that the police seem to have fixed on is misconduct in public office. That is a rather complex law that boils down to whether the public official acted according to the law and according to the best interests of the kingdom.

Sean Coughlin, a journalist covering the Royals for the BBC, wrote the arrest, "follows a series of claims that he allegedly shared official documents, including to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein."

He continued, "Previously reported allegations included that he had shared reports from trade visits, forwarded a confidential briefing on investment in Afghanistan, and passed a Treasury briefing to a personal business contact."

He added, "Although, it's worth bearing in mind his actual title was the UK Special Representative for International Trade and Investment -- and the Department for Business and Trade has emphasised, in guidance to the BBC, that he was not operating under the rules that now apply to trade envoys."

That seems to give the former prince a legal defense for his actions, but whether a jury would accept it is another story. What is important here is that once the TVP started searching his homes, anything and everything they find is fair game for criminal and/or civil charges.

"Randy Andy" is almost certainly going to face some kind of courtroom drama. His network of friends and hangers-on may well wind up in court, too. But this is the brother of the King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. If His Majesty knew anything about these shenanigans, the monarchy as an institution will come under threat.

Things are likely to come back to the settlement Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor made with Virginia Giuffre regarding any sexual impropriety he may have committed with her. Her Majesty Elizabeth II signed off on the deal and that funds from the late Queen and Prince Philip made up part of the 12 million quid paid out. King Charles appears not to have contributed anything to the settlement fund. The question becomes whether he knew all the details. What did the King know and when did he know it?

There is a scenario whereby Charles III finds himself caught in this quicksand scandal and begins to sink. He might find abdication in favor of Prince William to be the only exit that saves the Firm, as the family refer to the monarchy. The abdication of Edward VIII was a crisis. The abdication of Charles III might be the salvation of the monarchy, or it could mean its end if the rot has spread too far.

dA royal pardon is technically possible, but such a move would be the end of the system. His Majesty understands that well. His official statement on the arrest of his brother read in part, "Let me state clearly: the law must take its course."

Let justice be done though the heavens may fall.
